Florida is a rare state in which you are not “required” to carry any Bodily Injury Liability coverage. The state requirement to register and maintain an automobile consists of two coverage options: Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage to equal $10,000 per person and Property Damage Liability to cover $10,000.
I’m sure you’ve heard somewhere that “Florida is a no-fault State.”
What this means is that if you get into a car accident, regardless of fault, your Florida personal auto insurance policy (which will include State required PIP) covers the first $10,000 (as an aggregate limit, subject to your treatment, etc.) in medical costs related to an injury sustained in said car accident.
So even if Joe Shmoe doesn’t realize that you’re stopped at a red light and smashes into the back of your car—clearly making the incident his fault—your Florida Personal Auto Insurance Policy will be covering your medical costs through Personal Injury Protection—up to your limit of coverage. His policy, provided he has one, is supposed to then cover, at minimum, $10,000 in Property Damage liability to repair your car if his company accepts liability for the incident.

My recommendation, in fact, is to carry Bodily Injury Liability, as well…which will protect you from legal action that could incur if you’re deemed at-fault in an accident, up to your limits of liability.
If you’re financing or leasing your vehicle, it’s also important to make sure that you carry physical damage protection: Comprehensive and Collision insurance are the only features that protect or repair your asset.
